King Saud University is an independent non-profit academic institution under the Royal Commission for Riyadh City. It opened on 14 Rabi Al Thani 1377 AH / 6 November 1957 and is considered the second university established in Saudi Arabia after Umm Al Qura University. Its name was changed to Riyadh University during the reign of King Faisal bin Abdulaziz, then restored to King Saud University during the reign of King Khalid bin Abdulaziz. King Saud University is the second largest university in the world by area. The Saudi government allocates the equivalent of 1% of the national budget annually to the university. In 2024, it ranked among the top 90 universities worldwide. It includes dozens of scientific, humanities, and health colleges, many institutes and research centers, and King Salman Central Library, one of the oldest and largest libraries in Saudi Arabia.
